THE SURFACE
OF
FEELING
Born in Australia, Eli Samuel works with a photographic language rooted in texture, physical presence, and emotional immediacy. His practice favors analog processes and minimal intervention, allowing imperfections to remain visible rather than corrected. Drawn to intimacy and the physical reality of the body, his images resist polish and instead linger on surface, gesture, and feeling.
By photographing Anndrea Nelson, Eli Samuel explores intimacy through skin, texture, and the quiet language of make-up. The images unfold as a study of sensuality and vulnerability, shaped by analog imperfection and emotional restraint.
In this editorial, focused on make-up as material rather than disguise, Eli collaborates with stylist Diana Maldonado to construct a series that embraces exposure. Shot without retouching, the photographs reveal stretch marks, uneven skin, and traces of touch.
Anndrea Nelson appears caught within herself. Her presence feels suspended, at times frozen, holding sadness and softness at once.
A portrait of intimacy, told through texture and light.

This series treats make-up not as embellishment but as an extension of emotion, something worn, erased, and felt. Beauty emerges through honesty rather than concealment.
